Traditionally, Spirit Poles are placed on the land to mark significant areas. Group them together in varying sizes to create a stunning presence (click through the images to see an example). Equally beautiful indoors, on a patio or in a special area of your home.
With this sculpture, Tarisse wanted to translate her “Handing Down” story into a 3D object. The choice to use metal is a reflection on the strength and longevity of the Australian Indigenous culture, and the stories passed down over the centuries.
Handing Down Story
Many of the stories told by Tarisse King, through her artwork, were handed down directly by her father, the late William King Jungala. After William passed away, Tarisse would feel connected to her father through her artwork, but she always felt a longing to connect with her Australian Indigenous culture.
Tarisse regularly travels back to her ancestors’ lands, the Gurindji country. And now she brings her 3 daughters. Tarisse has enjoyed sharing the stories and history of the Gurindji Ancestors. This new series of artworks are a representation of these trips, and the handing down of the stories to her children.

Note: A white insert was used for photography, to highlight the carved design. The spirit pole is hollow, and the cut-out shows the metal behind.
